The Skinning Community - DeviantART Get Ready

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 20, 2008, 5:34 PM

Jeez, gospels are shorter

I said I was going to post a newsletter but it's more fitting for my journal, so here goes ;-)

I've had just over 3 months to settle in as a Gallery Director, see what's going on and get used to things. In that time I have conducted 6 interviews, submitted 5 newsletters, awarded 7 Daily Deviations, cleaned out all miscats, structured and planned a new galley layout (soon to be implemented) and submitted 6 guikits and skins. Not to mention still help run my own jointly owned site and planning to be working with another LARGE community (more info on that later :P)

I think I've settled in quite well for a short period of time ;-) and I feel like I now know what's expected of me and can tell you guys where I'm heading and what I plan.

What to expect of Mrrste

You can probably tell by now that I don't mess around and like to make things happen quickly. I've went from nothing to where I am today in just under 3 years. I plan to carry on this trend with deviantART. DeviantART was originally created around skins & themes but has been a little over shadowed by the branching out to different artistic platforms. I want to fix this. I know the idea of DA being first thought of as a customisation resource is long gone, but I will bust a nut getting it at least back on level ground. You guys are gonna be instrumental in this too. This isn't my deviantart, it's everyone's deviantart and I won't try and take it in a direction without your input.

I have achieved so much in such a short time, well, it may not be epic achievements but from being nothing to what I am today, it's pretty damn sweet.

So what now?

My first step is already in action with a complete overhaul of the galleries. Bye Bye old poopie and unused stuff and hello new category's.

My second step is to do what has never been done in DA's history, and that is to award Daily Deviations to screenshots. Yes that's right, screenshots :D Why a damn screenie? I hear you shout. For me, there is 3 types of screenshot:

1. A screenshot of random crapness with baby doodling on to say "wohoo I've reached 17 pageviews"

2. A screenshot showing someone's current config but is really rather 'meh' and you pass on by

or

3. A screenshot showing someone's current config, but has been put together so that everything compliments everything, shows exactly what customisation is all about and has everyone asking about it.

It is the third type of screenshot that I feel can be worthy of a daily deviation because who is to say that what you turn your interface into, is any less worthy of being deemed art than a photo of a pokemon struggling with his sexuality while holding an apple in a candle lit room (or whatever the hell passes for art nowadays lol). I won't be awarding them regularly and it will need to be damn good, but it's time that people realised that many take pride in showing what customisation is all about, as much as a skinner does in a theme he creates.

My third step is to create the biggest competition that customisation has ever had with prizes to blow you away. I plan on leaving no category behind. I don't care if you skin docks, widgets or windowblinds, your part of the community and such a competition should be for everyone.

More in-depth information will follow because something like this takes a lot of planning and organising but I will try to get as many of guys and gals involved in the preparations as much as I can with things like a name and maybe a logo ;-)

As long as you all can tell that the gallery is being directed by a skinner and someone with a passion for customisation, then I am doing my job ;-). Copyright and Miscat issues should be a thing of the past because I deal with them with before they get reported, usually. So keep helping me to help you keep this place awesome by reporting them to me.

This is all I'm going to say cause I want to keep surprises and you don't wanna read more, hell I don't wanna re-read all this for spelling and grammar so I shall stop before it gets longer lol

Just Some Info

More Update News

Hey peeps!

I've had a few people asking about the gallery re-structure. At the mo, it's on pause. All efforts are being focused on the launch of DA V6 and some new things to help keep the gallerys clean. Don't worry, it will be getting done ;-)

Please continue to report miscats. You probably noticed I ain't been dealing with them though. Here is why. First of all, we believe in categories. We like tags, we want tags, we're building tags for deviantART but we will maintain a category structure and category browsing. By forcing artists upon submission to choose categories, we're effectively forcing tagging of a certain type. To maintain these categories, we will need the help of the broader community. So we're building tools to allow deviants to help us move miscats, with measures in place to prevent abuse! In the meantime, categories will get a bit untidy.

What can you do to help?

When reporting, think clearly about what category a work of art really belongs to. Reports that tell us that "this art work does NOT belong here" is NOT helpful. What we need are reports that tell us where an image DOES belong but I pretty well much rock and have been dealing with them before you guys can report them :p.

We are currently running statistics to determine how accurately the community is reporting suggestions for what category an image *should be* in. And are considering the implementation of triggers based on community feedback that would auto-move images to the suggested categories, produce a ticket informing the artist and the group of people who participated in the move.

This way, we empower the *community* to manage the community. Now that's what I call freaking awesome :#1:.

Thank Jebus

You know when you install something new, try it, don't like it, un-install it and go about your business? I don't...... well I sure as hell didn't this time! It decided to send my computer into a system fart so I just formatted the damn thing and just got everything back to the way it was ;) This is of course if you have been wondering why i've been a little quiet. Time to get things back to normal

“Smells like it, feels like it, taste likes it. Yes, its dog sh*t. Thank god I didn't stand in it.” (Mrrste)

Coming Up

My new theme, Interceptor, is 99% complete. Windowblind, Styler, Miranda, CAD and Docks are done. Firefox and Wallpaper in hand.

I shall post a new Skinmasters Interview on monday, unless I manage to finish my skin before then.

Loads of other things to sort. Junes gonna be a busy month, stay tuned ;)
