Deviant Symbol Replacement by mrrste Deviant Symbol Replacement by mrrste
Just another little suggestion. $spyed recently put the idea forward but I always thought that it would be kinda cool to have a little icon by our names instead of generic code. Just a visual expansion on his idea :-)

On the left you can see what they would look like on someones homepage. In the middle is what they would look like in a comment and on the right is the key. Obviously I ain't done icons for every type of member and these wouldn't be the icons that would be used (although I did a sweet job ;-))

A vote for mrrste is a vote for win :#1: oh and people I used as examples didn't know I used them :sprint:

I prefer the neutrality of the current symbols, actually. They're very understated and unobtrusive. I think images instead of symbols would make deviantART too visually busy and less professional-looking.

What =rotane and ~da-wite said...

Basically, instead of changing the icons, just make their meaning appear in the status bar or as a tooltip when the mouse hovers above them...

I didn't really mind much about the symbols before, but your little graphics make it look so much better. I really like this idea!!

kool designs but i think it would be more useful just to have a little help bubble (or it could be displayed in the status bar) with the meaning of the symbol pop up when you hover over it rather than a new set of images for ppl to learn.

The only one I have a problem with is the Gallery Director.

Why a magic wand for a "director"?

 Just doesn't seem to fit the word.

You know?

Ooooh.

I get it now.

Maybe your idea of a magic wand is better than the idea I had of a "director's chair", ie, one of these: [link] ..

.

As far as symbols go, it's a nice lil set. Like $zilla774 suggested, more differentiation between members, subbers & seniors would be good. Also, I think some form of hat ymbol would be good for the GMs... just to keep up the thing about ^ being a hat. I mean, it's been around for, like, ever

I think you've put some nice work into this, but personally, I don't like the idea at all :\ As you said, the icons would be different but the way it is, they're very subtle, clean and as =rotane talked about keeping professionalism, they are more professional to me. We already have avatars and I think that's enough without adding little icons as well - it's just too much in my opinion. So pretty much everything Phil has said I agree with. I appreciate the time you put into this though.

It would be nice if we could have the option to switch them off/on. :) It would kill dial-up connections with all those images.

Oh, that would not be a problem. It would only be a handful of icons (one for each status, so about 10), but they would be global. Meaning: loaded once, and then used repeatedly throughout the site. (Caching, you know?) So that would not be something to worry about :)

God no! :faint:

Please don't get me wrong, you put some effort into this, and that's always commendable, but I'm no fan of these icons whatsoever. Of any icons of this sort, actually. And here is why:
  • First, dA should aim to keep some level of professionalism, and "cute graphics" (as they say in the poll) goes right in the opposite direction.

  • Second, the symbols are established. And I'm talking about dA regulars here - the poll proves many users haven't got a clue (and thus can't be regulars, or just don't care enough). And what would a change do? Drive away the regulars. Newbs and people who don't care won't notice a different anyways; and a change from symbols to icons also won't end the asking of what they mean. (Of course, not every regular is pro keeping them, but it's the general impression that I got.)

  • Third, consider the icons put in a paragraph of text, via the :devusername: command - they would break the line-height just like emoticons, unless you created smaller icons, but then they'd be harder to read. And no, having 2 different sized sets of icons is again counterproductive.

  • Fourth, coming up with a working key is insanely hard to accomplish. It was different with the symbols, they are completely arbitrary (well, unless you want to count $ for payed staff, but really, it was more or less random when they were devised). Having to come up with working icons now that satisfy everyone isn't an easy thing.

  • Fifth, originality. I believe it was dA that first came up with something like usersymbols. There's many copycats around these days who use a similar system. Also, there are many sites that use images as status icons (hmm, actually, I only know of last.fm that used to do it, but anyway). If dA got them it would just make us copycats.

  • Sixth, and this is really subjective now (;)), the current system is totally cool.

I agree with what that guy said, and that one and that one "the symbols the way they are now are better because they are more subtle. I know you said these wouldn't be the icons used, but even if different icons were used, it seems like they are way too gaudy and distracting.

The way it is now, its more low key, and i think THAT is the direction we should be going instead of putting MORE emphasis on the differences between the different community members."

I like the symbols the way they are now. Simple, yet definitive.

very nicely concepted. my only concern would be the difference between the subscriber and non subscribers and seniors isn't immediately obvious. I'd want to see some more positive differences.

But the icons are clear and crisp and well designed, great job.
